Wildlife Management and Recreation Opportunities - Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge - Winona District

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge provides 240,00 acres of wetlands, forest, river, and prairie lands for the public to explore. There are opportunities for environmental education, hunting, fishing, canoe and bike trails, and wildlife viewing. The visitor center is available providing interactive exhibits and a movie about the seasonal sights and sounds on the refuge as well as public restroom.

Youth Development - Urban Roots MN

Operates youth development training, providing STEM-centered education, job readiness, and life skills training at the intersection of urban agriculture, conservation, and food entrepreneurship for youth ages 14 - 21: Market Garden Program: operates five urban vegetable, herb and flower gardens hosted at various partner locations including government property, a nursing home, a restaurant, and churches. Interns help plant and maintain the gardens, operate a farmer's market stand and sell produce to local restaurants. During the fall and winter, they develop entrepreneurial skills by creating and selling garden-related products and operating a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Conservation Program: interns work on community-based restoration projects such as building rain gardens, renovating parks, removing invasive species, and maintain 278 acres of green spaces in four parks. Cook Fresh Program: interns develop skills in food preparation and preservation, nutrition literacy, and creative cooking through collaborations with Twin Cities chefs.

Visitor Center - Prairie Wetlands Learning Center

Houses an exhibit area, the Bluestem Store, 4 classrooms and an education greenhouse. Nature Center - Houston Nature Center

The Houston Nature Center offers exhibits and programs focused on the natural environment. The center offers hands-on nature exhibits, special nature-themed children's program, and special programming during the summer on Saturday evenings. The Center also includes the eastern trail head for the Root River State Trail/Harmony-Preston Trail Systems. A band shell for summer music in the park, picnic facilities, primitive campsites with showers, birding trails, observations platforms for wetland birds, and a natural playground complete with a tree house and zip line, are also part of the Nature Centers lands.
