Eligibility

  • Available to Minnesota drivers whose driving privileges have been revoked, canceled, or denied due to alcohol or drug-related driving offenses under DWI/implied consent laws-Eligibility and participation requirements may vary based on the date of the offense:Offenses occurring before July 1, 2022:May be required for certain repeat or high-risk offenders and may be optional for some first-time offenders seeking early reinstatement, depending on eligibility criteria at the time of reinstatementOffenses occurring on or after July 1, 2022:Generally required for all reinstatement pathways following a DWI-related license revocation, with limited exceptions defined by statute

Provides eligible drivers with alcohol or drug-related offenses the ability to regain limited or full driving privileges by installing an ignition interlock device. The device requires a breath test before the vehicle will start and during use to ensure the driver is alcohol-free. Participation may be required or voluntary, depending on offense history, and compliance is required for license reinstatement.
