Provides camps and tutoring for literacy during summer school months in partnership with host schools and the school district. Generally, offers two camps open to all ESLC students at all sites and the students attending the host school. Grade-level tutoring and camps vary by location, and locations may change each summer. The program includes one-on-one reading tutoring, reader's theatre, literacy games, and activities. Tutors use strengths-based approaches that incorporate a deep respect for each child as a person, and for the child's family, culture, and language. Children and family members work together on foundational skills, such as letter recognition, decoding, and sight word vocabulary.

Providing organization

East Side Learning Center
Partnering with parents and teachers, ESLC trained volunteers provide one-on-one reading tutoring for children in grades pre-kindergarten - 3rd. The goals of the program are to ensure that each child reads with pride and joy at grade level by 3rd grade; each child has the opportunity to develop a caring relationship with an adult who cares about their success in school; and to include parent participation in the reading progress of their child.
