Eligibility

- Volunteers: Individuals (age 21 and older), couples, or families interested in being a friend to a youth - Youth: Children ages 5 - 16 primarily from single parent families needing stable adult companionship who are residents of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville, and Rosemount

Required documents

- Families of Children: Application/registration form, proof of medical insurance, and signed release of information form for staff to connect with child's school, current and/or recent medical doctors or psychologists about the child's health and needs for a mentor, if applicable - Volunteers: In addition to an application/registration form, background check, 3 references, current driver's license, and automobile insurance is required. May also seek a release of information to talk to current and/or recent medical doctors or psychologists about the volunteer's health and appropriateness as a mentor.

- Office: 9 am - 5 pm Monday - Friday - Services: Vary typically weekends and after school or evenings on weekdays

Description

Matches children who have a need for an additional supportive relationship with screened adult individuals, couples, or families. Once a match has been made, volunteers spend approximately one to four hours per week with the child for fun and enriching activities like going to the park, attending sporting events, sharing hobbies, baking cookies, or going to community events and cultural fairs. Volunteers make a one year commitment to the program. Provides quarterly group activities as well as passes to sporting events, local museums, and community attractions for mentor/child matches. Screening, training, and on-going support provided to all volunteers and youth. Volunteers make a one-year commitment to the child they are matched with though the average match length is three years and many relationships grow into life-long friendships.
