Eligibility

Open to all former or current foster care youth age 26 years and under who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, graduated from high school or received a GED, and have been accepted into an accredited college, university, vocational, technical, or trade school using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Also, the youth must meet one of the following criteria: - Adopted from foster care at age 16 or older - Have been in extended foster care or left foster care at age 18 or older - Have been in foster care for 30 consecutive days at age 17 - Had a juvenile court order transfer of permanent legal and physical custody from foster care at age 16 or older

Application process

- Call - Email Paul Minehart at [email protected] - Visit the website for the online application if applying to a non-accredited school at https://edocs.mn.gov/forms/DHS-5339-ENG. If applying for an accredited school, and if the answer on the FAFSA is 'Yes' to being in foster care at age 13 or older, no application is needed.

Description

The program provides up to $5,000 per school year to help students under the age of 26 who have aged out of foster care for post-secondary education at a college, university, vocational, technical, or trade school. The Minnesota Education and Training Voucher (ETV) Program provides the funds. The money does not need to be paid back. The funding can go towards tuition and fees, student books, housing, child care, transportation, other school-related costs, or living expenses. Eligible applicants need to follow the grant application process.
